Visitors at a theme park in Staffordshire were forced to evacuate a rollercoaster this morning.

Thrillseekers were seen exiting the Shockwave attraction at Drayton Manor theme park at around 10.30am in Tamworth on Saturday.

Drayton Manor said the ride had experienced a "temporary stoppage" and reopened shortly after 2pm.

The theme park apologised "for any inconvenience caused".

Footage circulating on social media showed the ride stopped with several people on baord.

Greg Taylor told the MailOnline "many people evacuated".

Another visitor at the theme park posted on Twitter that other rides had stopped working.

"Shocking day," wrote Robin Hendon. "Shockwave broke down with first load on, Maelstrom off, Pirate Ship off, Air Race off, not got on a ride yet #awful."

A spokeswoman for Drayton Manor said: “At 10.35am today, Shockwave experienced a temporary stoppage on the lift and guests were evacuated.

"At no point was guest safety compromised. The ride reopened shortly after 2pm.

“We sincerely apologise to our visitors for any inconvenience caused and stress that the safety of our guests is our priority.”

An 11-year-old girl was killed while on a water ride during a school trip to the theme park in 2017.

Drayton Manor closed its doors for three days days following her death.
