Coldplay have topped the UK charts for the sixth time with their latest album Ghost Stories.

The new release went straight to number one last night, following on from the success of the British band’s first five albums.

It is also the fastest-selling album of 2014 after 168,000 copies were bought in its first week, according to the Official Charts Company.

The previous record holder was Caustic Love by Paolo Nutini with 109,000 copies when it was released last month.

Coldplay’s lead singer, Chris Martin, made a surprise appearance at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow yesterday, joining Kings Of Leon on guitar as the band performed. The band closed the first day of the festival at Glasgow Green on Saturday.

They are Parachutes (2000), A Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002), X&Y (2006), Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008) and Mylo Xyloto (2011).

Miles Leonard, chairman of Parlophone and Warner Bros Records, who works with Coldplay described the new album as ‘capitvating.’

The band's previous five studio albums have sold more than 11.1 million copies in the UK to date.

He said: “It is a thrill to celebrate their sixth straight Number 1 album in the UK; a landmark moment in a long list of accomplishments for an extraordinary band.”
