Clegg revisits riot-hit community

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is revisiting some of the areas of Tottenham damaged in the riots
12 April 2012

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is returning to the streets of Tottenham to see how the area is recovering from the devastating riots.

He will see how Government money is supporting the north London community, where the wave of rioting which swept through the capital and other major English cities began earlier this month.

Mr Clegg said he had been impressed by the community spirit in Tottenham on his first visit three weeks ago and now wanted to find out what more could be done to help.

He said: "Three weeks ago, Tottenham witnessed the worst violence on its streets for many years. In the aftermath, I met local residents and shopkeepers to see the damage for myself and hear about what they had been through.

"Even then I was impressed by the strength of the community and the commitment to repair what had been destroyed. Today I am going back to meet the same residents and shopkeepers to hear about what progress has been made and see what still needs to be done."

Among those he will meet is jeweller Steve Moore, whose shop was destroyed by rioters.

Mr Clegg said: "Steve, the local jeweller who I met last time, has had his shop demolished.

"There simply wasn't enough left to salvage. I want to hear from him about what the council have been doing to support him in contacting his customers and beginning the process of rebuilding his life's work.

"For residents who lost their homes, many do not yet have a permanent place to live.

"I want to talk to them about their experiences about what is being done to help and support them."
