Charles embarks on Pakistan visit

12 April 2012

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are travelling to Pakistan for their first ever trip to the Islamic republic.

Charles and Camilla will arrive in the capital Islamabad ready to undertake a five-day tour of the country, which will also see them journey to areas stricken by last year's earthquake.

The official foreign visit - their third together - is taking place despite a Foreign Office warning of a high risk of terrorism in the region, with no part being immune from the threat.

The Prince and the Duchess' stay has already sparked controversy. British death row inmate Mirza Tahir Hussain was due to be executed in Pakistan on November 1 while they were in the country.

But after Charles and Prime Minister Tony Blair intervened in his plight, the execution was delayed for two months.

There were calls for Charles to abandon his visit unless the scheduled hanging was stopped.

Hussain, who is originally from Leeds, is now set to be hanged on or after December 31. He had his conviction for murdering a taxi driver 18 years ago quashed, but he was then sentenced to death by an Islamic court under Sharia law.

Charles will be under pressure to help secure a pardon for Hussain when he meets the Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf and the Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

The delicate diplomatic negotiations could come during what is one of the most important visits for the Prince for some time.

The heir to the throne is seen as a key figure in bridging divides between Islam and the West, and will take on the task during the trip, bringing with him his message of religious tolerance.
