Bus driver bailed after fatal crash

12 April 2012

A driver arrested after a fatal crash between two buses and a skip wagon has been released on bail, police said.

The 35-year-old driver of a single decker bus was arrested following the crash on the A630 at Hooton Roberts, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, at about 3.15pm on Friday.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed until July, South Yorkshire Police said.

Police named the other bus driver killed in the crash as Peter Drury, 57, from Brinsworth, Rotherham. He was driving a double decker bus and was certified dead at the scene.

Ten other people on his bus were hurt in the accident. The driver and passenger in the skip lorry had to be cut free from their vehicle and were taken to hospital.

None of the people taken to hospital are said to have life-threatening injuries.

Police said the TM Travel single decker bus hit a skip lorry which then crashed head-on with the double-decker, operated by First.

First issued a statement which said: "Sadly the First bus driver has tragically lost his life as a result of the collision. The deepest sympathies of everyone here at First are with the family and friends of the driver.

"We also understand a number of passengers on the X78 service have sustained injuries, our thoughts are also with them.

"We will be working closely with the police as part of their investigation."
