Brown urges unity among Kenyans

12 April 2012

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has spoken to Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga and urged them to work for "unity and reconciliation" in the east African nation.

Mr Brown voiced Britain's concerns about the conduct of last week's disputed elections, and said all sides should work for a solution reflecting the will of the Kenyan people, said a Downing Street spokesman.

The telephone contacts came as British tourists were advised against all but essential travel to areas of Kenya's two biggest cities amid post-election violence which has already claimed more than 135 lives.

The Downing Street spokesman said: "The Prime Minister has spoken to Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga earlier.

"With both he expressed the UK's concerns about the conduct of the Kenyan elections, but strongly urged both to work for unity and reconciliation.

"All sides should exercise and work for a solution that reflects the will of the Kenyan people."
