Tony Blair clashes with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid in fiery Brexit debate on Good Morning Britain

Good Morning Britain presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid clashed with Tony Blair over Brexit this morning as the former PM renewed his call for a People’s Vote.

Mr Blair, who denied claims he has been telling European leaders to “hold firm” as Britain’s divorce date looms closer, said Theresa May should ask the EU for more time to get a Parliamentary consensus on a Brexit deal before putting the final decision back to the people.

But in a fiery exchange, Piers told him there would "be hell to pay" if Brexit doesn’t happen and claimed people "driving the train" wanted to defy the referendum result.

He said: “Our democratic process surely rests on at least enacting the result of the first referendum and seeing if it works before you bring in another referendum.

"If you don’t, why should we ever trust the will of government or Parliament to enact the will of the people ever again with any vote.”

Mr Blair responded: “To be fair to Theresa May I think she actually does want to deliver Brexit even though she voted Remain and I think you’ve got a whole set of Labour MPs who voted Remain and now say we’ve got to deliver the Brexit result.

“I completely get it, and I also get the fact that the vast majority of British people are just saying why don’t you get on with it, we voted for it why don’t you get on with it."

He added: “The problem is that when we just say get on with it, when you come to study the detail, it is actually important to know, roughly at least, in reasonably clear framework, your future relationship with Europeans before you leave, otherwise you’re moving house before you have any idea what the new house looks like.

“So even now I think it would be possible for her to correct this flaw by going to Europe and saying to them, because I think they would respond perfectly well to this, say ok I need some more time to put some more options before Parliament.

“Once those options come before Parliament Parliament’s got to vote, they want a soft Brexit, they want a hard Brexit, they’ve got to make up their minds and then the question I think would then be, because I think when people see the detail of what soft and hard means, it may be that members of Parliament think actually the final say should go with the people.”

Meanwhile Susannah Reid defended Mrs May’s deal, saying she he been “very clear on the Government’s position” to leave the single market and customs union but only fell short when it came to the issue Northern Irish backstop.

Many people praised Morgan and Reid's handling of the debate, with one Twitter user saying: “Good interview with Tony Blair Piers and Susanna. You highlighted what many of the British public are thinking and hoping. We had a referendum, we voted and we got a result so let's get on with it!”

Another said: “I must admit Piers is doing a cracking job with Blair. When they have to drink water it’s when they are buying time to think of an answer."

However others claimed it was Blair who came across well.

“Regardless of your previous opinion of Tony Blair, he’s talking more sense than most in respect of Brexit," said one person.

"That’s one of the most sensible conversations I’ve heard on the subject for a while.”

Another added: “Tony Blair is spot on! If he was prime minister now it would all be sorted.”
