Boy, 9, dies in 'tragic accident'

12 April 2012

A nine-year-old boy has been killed in a "tragic accident" at home, police said.

Neighbours said Diogo Garcia, of Thetford, Norfolk, died following an incident on Thursday night.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the boy was taken to the West Suffolk Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Firm, of Norfolk Police, said: "We are treating the death as a tragic accident at this time. However, we await the outcome of a Home Office post-mortem, which will take place tomorrow."

No details of what led to the "accident" have been released by police.

Police refused to confirm his identity but neighbours said he was Diogo Garcia.

One resident said: "Diogo was a lovely boy and everyone is devastated. We don't know how he died. We heard it was something to do with a belt but don't know exactly. It's very sad. He was a popular lad and well-loved."

Police were called to the terrace house in Durham Way at 8.10pm on Thursday following a report from paramedics.

Floral tributes were left near to the entrance of the cul-de-sac where the boy lived. A note left with flowers read: "You will always be remembered and truly missed."

Another said: "Goodbye little sunshine."
