Blair to appear on al Jazeera TV

12 April 2012

Tony Blair will appear on the new English language channel of the controversial Arab satellite news station al Jazeera.

The Prime Minister is being interviewed by veteran broadcaster Sir David Frost for the first edition of his weekly current affairs programme, Frost Over The World.

Mr Blair's appearance is a major fillip for the Qatar-based station once denounced as propaganda by ex-US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld and perhaps best-known for broadcasting tapes from Osama bin Laden and al Qaida.

It has even seen its offices in Baghdad and Kabul bombed during the coalition military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

With its new English language channel, launched this week, it aims to establish itself as an alternative to US and European broadcasters as an impartial provider of news.

For Mr Blair, the interview offers a chance to reach out to a significant Muslim audience at a time when he his hoping to use the final months of his premiership to revive the Middle East peace process.

Sir David said: "It is a tribute to the stature of Al Jazeera that the Prime Minister has chosen to appear on Frost over the World's inaugural broadcast.

"It is a privilege to have him on our first show. We are all very excited at the prospect."
