A bin bag stuffed with severed cats' heads has been found dumped near Manchester's famous Curry Mile.
The RSPCA and Manchester City Council launched an urgent investigation after the grisly discovery on Friday.
The bag was found by a council worker during a clampdown on fly-tipping in the Rusholme area of the city.
An internal memo sent to councillors and town hall officials after the sickening find described the contents of the bin bag as "cat heads".
Chairman at Wythenshawe and Sale East Conservative Association Stephen Woods called for an immediate investigation into the discovery.
We were all absolutely flabbergasted when we found out about this," he told the Manchester Evening News.
"It's absolutely disgraceful the way they have been treated."
A spokesman for Manchester City Council confirmed an investigation was underway into the find off Wilmslow Road - just yards from the city's curry house district.
"A member of our team was called to an address in Rusholme earlier today and discovered a fly-tipped black bin liner containing animal remains," he said.
“This is obviously an incredibly distressing and sickening incident which we are now looking into but this is the first incident of its kind we have come across.
“At this stage we have no way of knowing how these animal parts came to be where they were discovered but we will be contacting the RSPCA as this is clearly an extreme example of animal cruelty.”
