There were delays on a busy stretch of the M74 motorway after a sheepdog managed to “take control of a tractor” and drive it on to the road.

Traffic Scotland reported the incident took place at junction 13 of the motorway in Abington, South Lanarkshire, at 8.15am this morning.

The dog, named Dom, reportedly leaned on the controls of the vehicle and caused it to go through a fence and onto the busy motorway.

It then crossed over the road before crashing into the central reservation.

Traffic Scotland tweeted: “M74 (N) J13-RTC due to dog taking control of tractor…nope not joking.

“Farmer and police at scene, vehicle in central res.”

It later reported the dog was fine and the route was cleared, but the incident was “the weirdest thing we have ever reported”.

It was later discovered the dog usually accompanies farmer Tom Hamilton in the passenger seat.

But when he left the vehicle to tend to a lamb Don managed to lean on the controls and drive it through the fence.

He told ITV News: “I was out in the mini-tractor and had stepped out of it to get a lamb, which looked like it was about to get out of the gate.

"I had not put the brake on the tractor and when I turned round I got a fright as the vehicle was careering down the hill, through a gate and on to the M74."
