The Prime Minister has been criticised for a picture of himself with Little Ant and Dec that was posted by his Twitter account while he led tributes to Nelson Mandela in a special debate in the House of Commons.

Mr Cameron will be questioned by the two youngsters for a charity TV show and his account was used to publish a photo of him meeting them along with a reindeer.

The tweet read: "With Little Ant & Little Dec ahead of a tough £TextSanta interview."

But other Twitter users criticised the Prime Minister for the timing of the post, which came shortly after he had delivered his tribute to the former South African leader in the Commons.

Martin McGrath wrote said: "Cameron's account tweeting during Mandela tributes £classy".

Another Twitter user, @woodo79, said: "That awkward moment when @david-cameron tweets about Ant & Dec while Parliament is paying tribute to Mandela..."

Labour councillor Alasdair Ross wrote: "So House of Parliament paying tribute to Mandela - with great speech by @Ed-Miliband - and Cameron is tweeting about Little Ant and Dec!"

Text Santa is ITV's annual charity appeal which is raising money for Age UK, Barnardo's, BeatBullying, British Heart Foundation, CLIC Sargent and Help the Hospices.

In his tribute to Mr Mandela, the Prime Minister told MPs: "Nelson Mandela was a towering figure in our lifetime - a pivotal figure in the history of South Africa and the world."
