Audit Office denies report claims

12 April 2012

The National Audit Office (NAO) has denied that it had substantially changed a report on the Government's controversial NHS IT system.

An article in Computer Weekly magazine said three draft NAO reports were changed during a clearance process between the NAO and the Department of Health which lasted nearly six months.

It said the final NAO report, published in June, omitted "some of the serious criticisms of the scheme that were in the draft reports, and includes extra pages showing the NHS's National Programme for IT in a better light".

The £12.4 billion upgrade has come under repeated fire and some parts of the system are two years behind schedule.

The NAO insisted that all its reports undergo a clearance process to establish the facts.

A spokesman said: "The facts of the report are agreed upon because we want to produce the most accurate and fair report possible.

"The core conclusions of this report did not change."

The spokesman said the NAO may produce an updated report on the IT system but had always indicated it may do so.

He said no work was currently being carried out on a fresh report.
