Archbishop's prayer for Madeleine

12 April 2012

The Archbishop of York has penned a special prayer for Madeleine McCann to mark the anniversary of her disappearance.

Dr John Sentamu, a vocal supporter of Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry after they were declared "arguidos" or official suspects by Portuguese police, called on people across Britain to pray for their daughter's safe return.

In wording which reflects the McCanns' own belief that the four-year-old is still alive, he wrote: "Keep her safe and take away her fear and anxiety. May your holy angels guard and protect her."

An outspoken critic of media speculation surrounding the case, Dr Sentamu has kept a candle burning for Madeleine in York throughout the last year.

"A year ago today Madeleine McCann was abducted from her bed in Portugal," he said.

"I ask that all of us redouble our efforts to pray for her safe return.

"Here at Bishopthorpe Palace, prayers have been said daily for her, and a candle burns in hope near a poster of Madeleine.

"As the poster of a year ago says: 'look into my eyes'.

"May we each look and not turn away."
