Anthony Joshua threw his weight behind the largest amateur boxing tournament in Europe taking place in north London.

Joshua, 33, the former two-time world heavyweight champion, hailed youngsters competing in the Haringey Box Cup at Alexandra Palace.

DAZN Group, the world’s leading sports streaming platform, is sponsoring the event that runs from Friday, June 16 to Sunday, June 18.

Joshua - set to fight Deontay Wilder in December - said: “The Haringey Box Cup is the must-do event for aspiring professionals.

“As an amateur, I was lucky enough to win it twice”.

Since its inception in 2008, the Haringey Box Cup has become famous for identifying future boxing champs including Joshua, Katie Taylor, Nicola Adams, Chris Eubank Jr, Cheavon Clarke and Anthony Yarde.

Haringey Police & Community Amateur Boxing Club started the competition as a youth development project.

It now attracts elite amateur boxers from the UK, America, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Last year, 5,000 spectators watched over the course of the event.

This year, DAZN will be filming highlights for a boxing special to maximise the fighters’ exposure.

DAZN US CEO Joseph Markowski said: “We believe in the power of boxing and that community boxing gyms play a vital role in society.

“We have always looked upon the cup as a celebration of the amazing work that these community gyms do and are pleased to sponsor such an important event in the sport.

“We wish all the participants the best of luck.”
