Another Briton kidnapped in Nigeria

12 April 2012

Another British oil worker has been kidnapped in southern Nigeria, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said.

The Briton was one of two foreign workers abducted from a production barge near Calabar in Cross River State late on Sunday night.

The news came as the family of three-year-old Margaret Hill celebrated the British toddler's release after being held by gunmen in Nigeria for three days.

An FCO spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a British national was one of two foreign workers abducted on the evening of July 8.

"The incident happened on a production barge near Calabar, Cross River State.

"Consular officials are in close contact with the company, family and local authorities. We are not prepared to speculate about who might be behind the attack. The Nigerian authorities are in the lead on the investigation into the incident. FCO officials are in touch with them."

She added that the kidnapped workers were working for Exprotech.

The second hostage is Bulgarian, according to Bulgaria's ambassador to Nigeria, Petko Prandzhev.

Meanwhile doctors have given Margaret Hill a clean bill of health, her father said.

She was reunited with her parents on Sunday night after an ordeal which began when she was snatched on the way to school in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
