Amazon has taken down caps with the racist slogan "Black Lives Don't Matter" after an online backlash.

The hats, sold by a third party, were seen by barrister Alexandra Wilson, who drew attention to them on social media.

She said it was "really disappointing" and "honestly embarrassing" that the e-commerce giants had allowed the offensive merchandise to be sold.

Several days later Amazon said that the caps had been removed.

"All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account. The product in question is no longer available," the company said in a statement.

Ms Wilson celebrated the products' removal, saying: "Thank you to everyone who contacted Amazon directly. These small actions make a big difference.

"No one should ever have to see anything like this. ‘It’s not only hurtful but potentially dangerous in the “real world”.’

The barrister previously said that she was surprised that Amazon had not taken the hats down earlier.

"Multiple people reported it and racist material should be removed immediately," she told the Independent.

"Websites like Amazon definitely need to have better checks in place for both their descriptions and photos because this isn’t the first time something like this has happened."
