The parents of Alfie Evans have asked people to stop editing pictures of their son with angel wings.

The boy's aunt told supporters of "Alfie's Army" official Facebook page that pictures of the toddler with wings and halos shared days after his death were upsetting.

The 23-month-old, who suffered from a degenerative brain condition, died on Saturday at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool days after he was taken off a life support machine.

Sarah Evans told the Facebook group: "Pictures people are doing of Alfie with wings and halos saying RIP Alfie, it's really upsetting Kate so if you want to have a picture of Alfie on your profiles that is fine but none of the above on them please."

Ms James and Mr Evans had challenged the decision to stop Alfie's treatment in the courts and were hoping to take their son to Italy for treatment.

The couple received huge public support.

However a high-court ruling gave Alder Hey the go-ahead to remove his life-support on April 23.

The toddler's grieving aunt also thanked people for the flowers and cards sent to the family before adding: "Alfie our warrior is missed beyond belief."

His parents announced his death on Facebook writing: "Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30am. We are heart broken. Thank you everyone for all your support."

People flocked to the hospital to leave flowers, cards and toys at Alder Hey Hospital.

One card said: "We fell in love with a little boy we never knew. Alfie will be forever engraved in our heart. Fly high little man."

Pope Francis, who met Mr Evans when he flew to Rome, was among those to send their condolences to the family.

He said on Twitter: "I am deeply moved by the death of little Alfie. Today I pray especially for his parents, as God the Father receives him in his tender embrace."

A spokesman for Alder Hey said: "We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alfie's family at this extremely distressing time.

"All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them.

"This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected."
