Aldi has announced all its stores will be shut on Boxing Day as a way of thanking its staff.

Britain's fourth largest supermarket chain will also be closed on Christmas Day and will reopen on 27 December. Shoppers are advised to stock up on groceries before then. The supermarket chain has 1,000 branches in the UK.

The communications director at Aldi UK, Richard Thornton, said: “We recognise that Christmas is an important time for many of our colleagues and keeping our stores closed on Boxing Day gives them more time to spend with their families."

He added: “Customers will have plenty to look forward to in the run-up to Christmas, with more of Aldi’s brand-new Christmas ranges arriving in stores over the next few weeks.”

Aldi recently launched its Willy Wonka Christmas advertisement, which features its mascot, Kevin the carrot, alongside Grate Grandpa.

The pair embark on an adventure inside the factory in a story that parodies Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as Kevin encounters characters possessing all sort of personalities. There is even a Spoilt Little Sprout – only one guess is necessary as to which human character the vegetable portrays!

The supermarket chain recently announced it will recruit 3,000 workers in the run-up to Christmas.
