A Premier League footballer has been banned from driving after racking up 24 penalty points in the space of just nine months.

Abdoulaye Doucouré, the 28-year-old Everton midfielder, was caught driving at 102mph in June last year and a month later was stopped in his wife’s Lamborghini without insurance.

He was then accused of two more driving offences in Merseyside after his move from Watford FC and was convicted of failing to respond to police letters in February this year.

The French footballer was handed six points for each offence, ordered to pay £3,660 in fines plus £576 in court costs and fees, and banned from the road for six months.

The Standard revealed in February how he had been detained by police at the side of the road in Highgate on July 2 last year when driving his wife’s £170,000 Lamborghini Urus.

Pc Sinead O’Sullivan said he was unable to provide proof of insurance and said that the vehicle belonged to his wife and the insurance certificate was at home. When his wife arrived and said she was unable to provide the documents, the car was seized and Doucouré was charged with driving without valid insurance.

The previous month, on June 6, Doucouré was in an Audi when he was caught driving at 102mph on his way to training. He was given a fine and penalty points for driving with no insurance. His speeding conviction was due to be sentenced by London magistrates last month, but the case was transferred to Wirral magistrates’ court along with two further offences.

He was convicted of two counts of failing to give information, and was issued with £1,000 fines and six penalty points for each offence. He was handed the same penalty for the 102mph speeding offence, meaning he had a total of 24 penalty points on his licence. At a hearing on November 4, Doucouré was banned from driving for six months due to the accumulated offences.
