It was a game of two halves, both of them boring, until a cat brought much-needed life to the match and spawned thousands of feline puns on Twitter.

Tottenham were taking on Liverpool at Anfield last night when a cat sauntered onto the turf. Play was stopped in the 11th minute after referee Michael Oliver spotted the cat heading toward Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

It managed to evade capture before being shepherded into a corner by several stewards and removed, much to the amusement of Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish. Press Association reported of the match that ended 0-0: "There were few chances at either end and one of the highlights was when a cat ran on to the pitch."

Thousands took to Twitter. Suggestions included Ferenc Pusskas after the Hungarian footballer Ferenc Puskás and Shola Ameowbi after Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi.

One user, Harry Lock, came up with an entire dream team that had Roberto Baggpussio - named after Italian star Roberto Baggio. The cat, which is often seen in the club's car park, had not been claimed, said Liverpool FC.
