TfL Tube strike 2018: Jubilee line walkout looms threatening London Underground travel chaos for tens of thousands

Fiona Simpson13 June 2018

A looming 24-hour Tube strike threatens travel chaos for tens of thousands of commuters as Transport for London bosses hold crunch talks with unions in a bid to stop the walkout.

Jubilee line services could shut down entirely if members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) and Aslef unions walkout as planned from Thursday morning .

TfL said on Tuesday that bosses were currently in talks with the unions but added: “As far as we are aware the strikes will go ahead.”

The strike over timetable changes would see rush hour commuters forced to find alternative routes across the capital on Thursday.

Disruption on the Jubilee line could see the Bakerloo and Metropolitan lines in north west London become extremely busy, TfL bosses warned.

The rest of the Tube network including other Tube lines, TfL Rail, London Overground and the DLR are expected to operate as normal.

Extra bus services will be put in place to help ease overcrowding, TfL added.

Last week, a planned walkout on the line was called off at the eleventh hour after talks between Transport for London and union bosses.

Nigel Holness, TfL's Director of Network Operations for London Underground, said: "The new timetable on the Jubilee line is benefiting thousands of customers every day, boosting capacity and making journeys quicker and more comfortable.

"We have adhered to the agreements we have in place with our unions throughout this dispute."

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: "RMT is bitterly disappointed that tube managers have knocked back an opport‎unity to negotiate a settlement to this dispute in extensive talks that broke up on Friday. They failed to put a single proposal forwards.

“RMT remains available for further talks but the action starting this week goes ahead as planned and the massive disruption it will unleash is solely down to the intransigence of tube management.”‎
