Tube services resumed this morning after the strike which shut down the entire Underground network.

Transport for London said it expected a good service on all lines ahead of this morning's rush hour, though a signal failure at Aldgate was causing delays on the Circle and Hammersmith and City Lines just before 7am.

Hundreds of thousands of commuters were forced to cycle, walk or run to work as the capital's transport network creaked under the strain of extra demand.

The walkout by union members - which was held from 6pm on Wednesday until this morning - was the result of a dispute over pay and the introduction of Night Tube services from September.

London Underground said it has contacted conciliation service Acas in an effort to arrange fresh talks to resolve the dispute.

Unions faced criticism from mayor Boris Johnson, as well as LU, for not accepting a "reasonable and fair" pay deal including an average two per cent rise this year, at least retail prices index inflation for each of the next two years and £2,000 for drivers on the new service.
