Londoners are facing major travel disruption on the day hundreds of thousands of people are to travel to the royal wedding and Wembley for the FA Cup final.

Several major Tube lines are to be partly closed on Saturday as people in the south-east head to Windsor as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot.

And up to 90,000 people will travel to Wembley for the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester United.

Despite the major events, Transport for London is planning to carry out works on Saturday and Sunday, leaving two major lines partly closed.

The District Line will be shut between Edgware Road and South Kensington, as well as Richmond, Wimbledon and Ealing Broadway services to South Kensington.

The Circle Line will also be shut between Aldgate and Edgware Road all weekend, and there will also be closures on part of the London Overground.

The planned works sparked anger. Conservative London Assembly Member Keith Prince warned: “It is not acceptable on such an eventful weekend to disrupt tube lines with maintenance works. It could ruin many people’s weekends”.

However, TfL said the impact would be limited.

“The vast majority of our services will be running as normal on the weekend of 19/20 May, helping everyone enjoy the royal wedding and the FA Cup Final,” said London Underground’s director of network operations Nigel Holness.

“There are some closures on the District and Circle lines due to essential upgrade work and on London Overground due to Network Rail track work.

"I advise customers to check their best route by using our website and social media channels for live traffic news and service updates.”

Meanwhile, rail passengers travelling to Windsor have been advised to arrive as early as possible ahead of the ceremony beginning at noon.

Windsor is served by two railway stations: Windsor & Eton Central and Windsor & Eton Riverside – both of which are putting on extra carriages next Saturday.

Network Rail estimates 60,000 passengers will travel to Windsor by train on the day, and warned passengers stations and trains would be “extremely busy”.

Passengers travelling to London were advised to use South Western Railway services from London Waterloo.
