Northern and Metropolitan Tube lines hit by signal failure

Tens of thousands of Tube commuters suffered an horrendous start to the day with major disruption on the Northern and Metropolitan lines.

Early Northern line services were suspended on both Charing Cross and Bank branches throughout central London due to signal failure.

There were only limited shuttle services at the northern end of the busy line used by more than 650,000 passengers a day.

London Underground operations director Nigel Holness said: "The Northern line has severe delays due to a power supply issue affecting the signalling system.

"Our engineers are on site investigating and working hard to fix the problem.

"We apologise to customers for the delays this has caused."

The line reopened around 6.30 am but severe delays continued throughout the length of the route into the morning peak.

At about the same time as the Northern line reopened Metropolitan line trains were suspended between Moorgate and Aldgate due to a signal failure at Finchley Road.

There were delays between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Moorgate. The line later fully reopened but delays continued.
