The Night Tube will not be extended to the Bank branch of the Northern line until 2022, Transport for London bosses have said.

The 24-hour service on Friday and Saturdays currently only runs on the Charing Cross branch of the line after launching in November 2016.

Services will not run overnight to stations including London Bridge and Elephant and Castle until a £600 million upgrade of Bank and Monument Stations has been completed.

The Night Tube also currently runs on the Central line through the station.

Project manager Andy Swift told the Standard: “The Night Tube currently runs on the Central line at Bank but not on that branch of the Northern line.

“It will not run on that line until the blockade for the upgrade of the station is lifted.

“It will be launched in 2022.”

The upgrade will see 1,500 metres of tunnels created 27 metres under the City of London.

New pathways will be created to simplify the “spaghetti maze” of tunnels used by 52 million commuters every year.

A new entrance to Bank station will be created in the European Headquarters of the Bloomberg building on Cannon Street

A new concourse will be created between the north and southbound Northern line platforms.

Twelve new escalators will be built during the revamp that will see specialists build 1,300 metres of new tunnels 27ft below iconic buildings including the Bank of England.

Project manager Andy Swift told the Standard: “The area between Bank and Monument stations is currently incredibly convoluted.

“It was designed in the 1880s and proves incredibly difficult for passengers entering, exiting and interchanging at the station every day.”

The Night Tube currently runs on the Central, Jubilee and Piccadilly line as well as the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line.
