A man has been killed in a multi-car crash on the M11.

Three others were rushed to hospital after the fatal collision at about 1.45pm involving a VW van, a Ford Focus and a VW Golf.

It happened near junction eight, the turn-off to Stansted Airport, and road and rail routes to the airport are now beset by delays.

Traffic in both directions was halted when an air ambulance landed on the motorway and only one southbound lane is now moving, with police warning drivers to seek other routes amid significant ongoing delays.

Meanwhile rush hour rail services to Stansted have been hit by overhead wire problems.

Hold-ups of up to 60 minutes have affected trains into Hertfordshire and Essex out of Liverpool Street Station this afternoon.

The problems were expected to last until at least into the evening.

Early reports of the M11 crash said firefighters were attempting to free someone trapped in the van.

However, the Essex fire service has since denied the initial reports.

A spokesman said: "The incident involves a camper van and two other vehicles. No one is trapped.

"Firefighters have completed their work at the incident and four casualties have been placed in the care of the Ambulance Service."

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "A man has sadly died as a result of the collision; three other people have been injured and have been taken to hospital.

"Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and to avoid the area whilst important recovery and forensic investigation work takes place.

"The road closures will be in place throughout the rush hour. Essex Police and the Highways Agency are working together to free the trapped traffic and are urging people to try and use alternative routes."
