A passenger has been dragged to his death by a New York subway train after getting an item of clothing caught in its doors, US media report.

The man was trying to board the service shortly before 7pm on Monday when he became trapped.

The New York Post reported he was running for the train at Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike as its doors were closing.

It was not clear how far the 51-year-old was dragged before the train came to a halt.

Emergency services attended and rushed the man to hospital, where he was treated for blunt force trauma but later died, the newspaper said.

An investigation by Metropolitan Transport Authority officials is said to be ongoing. Train crew have been questioned and tested for alcohol.
