Flights in and out of London’s airports have been disrupted after a sea of “Dickens style” fog descended on the capital.
Londoners awoke to a misty start on Saturday which has caused some planes to be grounded for safety reasons.
Flights at Heathrow have been delayed while some have been cancelled at London City Airport for the third time this week.
Airline passengers told how they were stuck on runways as others pressed airports to find out the scale of the disruption.
Martin Gilbraith tweeted: “Canarian sunshine beckons, but pretty much everything at Heathrow this morning is delayed by fog”.
While another traveller wrote: “@Gatwick_Airport we've been waiting on Helsinki runway for 90 mins now, told due to fog in gatwick. Is this true? Delays in LGW due to fog?”
And Natalie McDowell added: “Fs Heathrow sort the fog out, I wanna go home #2HourDelay.”
A Heathrow spokesman said: “There are currently delays to flights at Heathrow because of fog across the south east and large parts of Europe. The fog and mist are slowly improving.”
While London City Airport tweeted: "Due to adverse weather this morning passengers may experience delays & cancellations. Please contact your airline for latest flight info."
Elsewhere, Londoners took to Twitter to comment on the misty conditions.
Juliette Bauccio wrote: “Dickens style fog over London today.... #London #fog #dickens.”
Met Office forecasters said patchy fog should start to clear throughout Saturday morning but it is expected to remain cloudy in the afternoon.
