Lewisham train derailment: Southeastern commuters face more rail chaos after derailment of huge freight train

Mark Chandler25 January 2017

Commuters faced a second day of disruption after a huge freight train derailed and blocked lines at a major south London commuter hub.

Passengers using Southeastern services were facing problems after the derailed train blocked lines at Lewisham on Tuesday morning.

The rear three wagons came off the track with two turning over. There were no injuries.

Commuters who suffered horrendous problems getting to and from London yesterday face the same again today, including journeys home this evening.

Services remain cancelled, delayed and diverted across the south-east.

Network Rail said a crane had arrived on the scene at around 5.20am on Wednesday and had begun lifting away the toppled carriages.

Southeastern warned passengers there would be no stopping service at all at Lewisham, St Johns or New Cross on the Hayes line.

Services between Cannon Street and Orpington or Sevenoaks via Grove Park were also axed, running to and from Charing Cross instead.

And the impact continued to be felt at Blackfriars, with delays of up to 20 minutes expected on Thameslink services through the station.

Hard-pressed commuters used social media to rage against the latest delays.

Lianne Brook shared a photo of a station departure board with almost every train showing up as cancelled.

She wrote: “Here we go again…”

And Twitter user Conscious1993 wrote to Network Rail: “Once again trains Crayford through Lewisham up the wall.

“Once again no rail replacement service. You are a disgrace!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Bur Orpington commuterRichard Hawkes managed to get on a train, posting a photo of the overturned carriage still on the side of the tracks at Lewisham.

He wrote: “At least it fell away from the other platforms! Service patchy this morning but is running.”
