A busy section of the North Circular was shut during rush hour after a car burst into flames in the road.

Emergency services were scrambled to the A406 eastbound carriage way near Henley’s Corner just after 7.30am on Wednesday.

Dramatic pictures of the scene showed the front of a vehicle entirely engulfed in flames at the side of the road.

No one was injured in the fire and the road remained closed past rush hour, police said.

The eastbound side of the road remained closed for at least four hours after the incident while police and fire crews investigated.

Transport for London warned drivers of delays in the Hendon and Finchley areas.

A spokesman said the road may need to be resurfaced if diesel was spilled into the road, which would cause further tailbacks.

When asked on Twitter how long the closures would last, TfL Traffic News replied: “We are awaiting an update. The road **might** need to be resurfaced.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said the cause of the blaze is unclear at this stage.

He added: “We were called at 7.35am to a car alight and sent one Hendon fire engine to the scene.”
