Ginger-haired emojis are set to finally be released on Tuesday after years of campaigning from disgruntled redheads.

The Unicode Consortium, the body which creates new emojis, is launching 157 icons in its latest smartphone update.

A ginger man and woman are among them, as well as superheroes, bagels and toilet paper.

Redheads have been celebrating the news on Twitter, with one writing: “This is what equality feels like”.

“My kind is finally getting the respect we deserve,” added @cassthelilcat.

However, it could be months before Android and iPhone owners can actually use the new emojis.

Twitter and Facebook are expected to roll out the update over the summer, but smartphone operators are likely to wait until later in the year to fit with their own system updates.

There was global outcry last year when Apple unveiled its IOS 10.2 software update, which notably snubbed a long-standing Change.org petition for the tech giant to develop a ginger emoji.

Just 1 to 2 per cent of the population is born with red hair.

Other new emojis in the update include a lobster, DNA, cupcake and mosquito.
