Nasa has said it is a ‘defender’ of the planet, after its DART mission to divert the course of a far away asteroid was successful.

Nasa’s fridge-sized spacecraft spent 10 months travelling 7-million-miles to the asteroid called Dimorphos, before crashing into it at 14,000 miles an hour, ultimately changing its course.

The US space agency said the mission was designed to test whether the technique could be used in future to deflect asteroids that threaten to crash into earth.
