Sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll are all well and good but the most satisfying moments of my life have involved hurling a mobile phone at a wall.
Watching my old Nokia shatter into at least 16 separate pieces at the dramatic climax of a domestic sulk was a teen highlight worthy of The OC (eventually we all agreed, ironically, that I had not stolen anyone’s phone charger).
It’s a cathartic moment in which you reassert your superiority over technology, albeit momentarily.
Still, handsets are ludicrously expensive, which is why Mous’s nigh-on indestructible phone case seemed a wise choice.
The cases use a design called Airo Shock, a smart material capable of absorbing tremendous impact without adding any bulk.
Micro air pockets within the case act as tiny springs, significantly dampening the impact of falls, making your phone indestructible.
In the company’s promotional material, someone merrily lobs the case off a building, and it survives. “We want to emphasise we can’t guarantee that the cases will survive a 45ft drop every time,” says Oscar Jantti, marketing executive at Mous.
“When doing tests don’t maybe throw them out of windows — but normal, everyday drops definitely work.”
Even this proves a wrench. It is the ultimate stress test, because the thought of deliberately smashing my iPhone screen gives me palpitations. I forked out for a £70 phone screen repair last month, and am hesitant to lay out another small fortune in the name of tech journalism.
“Here, let me,” says a colleague, lobbing it across the canteen. It survives.
Nor was it rattled by an encounter with the hard floors of High Street Kensington Tube station.
Teenage me would be put out. The salaried adult me is delighted.
