Mario Kart is hands down one of the best Nintendo franchises ever created and it's finally coming to smartphones this summer, with the release of Mario Kart Tour.

Sure, Nintendo Switch owners have been able to enjoy the delights of Mario Kart on the go, but there has been no alternative for non-Switch owners, until now.

Officially announced back in January 2018, details have been quiet about the Mario Kart mobile game since Nintendo revealed it was delaying the release until summer 2019.

Nintendo is particularly excited about the release as analysts are predicting it could be a $1 billion game for the company.

Here’s what you need to know about the new Mario Kart mobile game.

Mario Kart Tour release date

Though the game was supposed to be released in March 2019, Nintendo delayed its release earlier this year.

Details are slim on an official release date, only that it will be “summer 2019”, so there are still a few months to go.

Mario Kart Tour beta release

If you live in the US or Japan and own an Android phone then you’re in luck, you are able to register for the Mario Kart mobile game’s beta release.

Visit Nintendo’s official Mario Kart Tour site to sign up for the beta and registrations will stay open until May 7.

Not everyone who applies will be invited to participate but if you can’t wait until the summer, it’s worth a shot.

What will Mario Kart Tour be like to play?

There’s no word on how Mario Kart Tour will actually work on a mobile device, but if you’ve played it on the Switch, it’s likely to be pretty similar, though simplified so it works well for mobiles.

Let’s face it, what could be more fun than slinging bananas and stealing power-ups on your tube commute?

If you can’t wait until the summer for your next Mario mobile fix, then there’s always Super Mario Run, the bite-size version of Mario released back in 2016 which you can play one-handed on your phone.
