If you can’t resist grabbing the aux cable or playing DJ at a party, then Instagram has a new feature you’ll love.

The social media app now lets you share 30-second song clips as part of an update to Notes.

In case you missed it, that’s the name of Instagram’s recently launched feature for sharing daily text updates with your pals. Friends and family can see these short messages atop their inbox for 24 hours. In addition, Instagram is also adding a new translation tool for notes.

The company claims that notes are a big hit with younger users, with more than 100 million teens sharing missives in the last three months.

Instagram’s musical update arrives just in time for a scorching summer when hit songs will be soundtracking picnics and road trips across the UK. You can use the feature to share the track you have on repeat or the ditty that reminds you of your crush.

From auto-playing songs on MySpace to viral TikTok dances, music has been intertwined with social media throughout its relatively short history. Audio has also long been a part of Instagram, with users able to add songs to their Reels and general posts.

How to share music on Instagram notes

To pen a note, tap the paper airplane icon at the top right of your feed.

Next, tap your profile pic, and tap “leave a new note”.

Now tap “Share a thought” and enter a note of up to 60 characters.

Here, you’ll also see a new musical icon that lets you search for and add a track to your note.

You will also have to select whether to share your note with followers you follow back or close friends.

Then, hit “share” to send the note to their inboxes. Your pals and loved ones will now be able to view, listen and reply to the note.

You can delete a note by tapping on it and selecting “delete note”.

Instagram’s next move

Instagram is increasingly expanding beyond photos, courtesy of short-form videos, known as Reels, and broadcast channels for sharing text and audio with multiple users.

It is also readying a Twitter rival that is reportedly titled Threads and is compatible with other less popular social networks like Mastodon and Bluesky.
