New comedies from Frankie Boyle, Bob Mortimer and Micky Flanagan and unseen interviews with First World War veterans and civilians and will lead a new season of “iPlayer only” content unveiled by the BBC today.

The new programmes were revealed as part of a major overhaul of the BBC’s hugely popular “on demand” online service to make it easier to use.

It comes less than a week after the broadcaster said it will move BBC 3 off the TV airwaves and make it available only through the iPlayer.

The BBC is committed to dramatically boosting the amount of exclusive iPlayer programmes it commissions and today’s line-up of shows is the most ambitious yet.

As well as a total of seven comedy shorts there will be a two new drama films called Flea and Tag and My Jihad available from today. Award-winning film-maker Adam Curtis has been commissioned to create a trilogy of “radical” films about contemporary Britain called Out There, At The Mountains of Madness and Dream Baby Dream “exploring the themes of hypocrisy, deception and corruption.” They will be available from July. There will also be more content tied into major events such as an online tour of the Matisse The Cut-Outs Exhibition at Tate Modern by musician and artist Goldie available in April and in-depth tours of the show gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show in May.

Other highlights include a new series of pirate radio show “mockumentary” People Just Do Nothing, a show that started to iPlayer but shown on BBC Three last year.

BBC Director-General, Tony Hall said: “This is an exciting day for us. BBC iPlayer is really popular, and new iPlayer will be even better. You’ll be able to find so many more programmes you might like and I hope everyone enjoys the new design. It’s just a first step to re-inventing BBC iPlayer, the best online television service in the world.”

BBC iPlayer was launched in December 2007 and since then its app has been downloaded 28 million times. So far more that 10 billion programmes have been watched on the service including 315 million in January this year.
