Apple kicked off its annual September keynote by announcing a new version of its popular Apple Watch - the Apple Watch Series 5.

Since the original Apple Watch was launched back in 2015, the watch has become the world's best-selling wearable.

That figure is only set to increase with the new Watch Series 5 thanks to design upgrades, a new always-on display and new health features.

Here's what you need to know.

Apple Watch 5: Always-on display

It's funny that smartwatches don't always have a constant display on the time, but that's because it uses up a lot of power and energy. However, Apple has made improvements to its Watch to ensure that now you can always see the time and anything going on on the Watch, such as fitness tracking or notifications coming in at that moment, without having to tap the screen.

This is something Fitbit has finally introduced with the Fitbit Versa 2 smartwatch as well.

Despite this always-on Retina display, Apple still promises the Watch has an 18-hour battery life.

There's also a built-in compass, which will be useful for finding directions using the upgraded Maps app and expect to see developers taking advantage of this feature in their apps too. Thanks to WatchOS 6, the new Watch software, the Watch Series 5 and previous generation Apple Watches will have their own App Store for the first time.

Apple Watch 5: Upgraded design

The new Apple Watch Series 5 is going to look extremely fancy on your wrist. It comes in four designs: aluminium, stainless steel, ceramic and a new titanium version. Apple says the aluminium case, in silver, gold and space grey, is made from 100 per cent recycled aluminium, whilst the ceramic version is "highly scratch-resistant".

There's also an upgraded Nike version and a new Hermès design too with a beautiful leather band.

Apple Watch 5: New health features announced

It's not an Apple Watch launch without new health features. A new Noise app helps wearers understood the ambient sound levels in their environments and how that can negatively impact their hearing. This ties into a new ear health study Apple is going to be carrying out - users can opt in to the study if they choose.

Period tracking in the upgraded Health app is also coming to the Watch for the first time and the Activity Trends feature will help wearers understood their progress by offering a long-term view of all their activities.

This is also combined with the usual features such as water resistance so you can track laps in the pool with the Watch on

Apple Watch 5: Price and release date

Prices for the new Apple Watch 5 start at £399, going up to £499 for the cellular version. You can pre-order the new Apple Watch 5 from the Apple Store now, and the Watches will start shipping next Friday, September 20.
