Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against officials in Nevada over claims a polling station stayed open after it was due to close.

Mr Trump’s campaign made a bid to sue the registrar of voters in Clark County over a polling site in Las Vegas that allegedly opened two hours longer than expected to accommodate people who were lined up to vote.

Mr Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton are in a tight battle for Nevada's six electoral votes in the closest US election in history.

All 50 US states and Washington DC have a set number of "electors" in the electoral college - roughly proportionate to the size of each state.

In Nevada, there are six electors, representing 1.1 per cent of the total 538 electoral votes that will be cast in the election.

Nevada state law says voters who are in line at 8pm (local time), when the polls close, must be allowed to cast their ballots.

The Republican’s campaign claims election officials allowed people to join the line after the billed closing time.

The billionaire business man asked for the ballots affected to be kept separate from other votes in anticipation of any legal challenges.

However, a judge later denied the candidate's request to start legal proceedings.
