Theresa May has revealed how she and husband Philip were victims of "fake news" over an erroneous claim they were expecting a baby.

The Prime Minister volunteered the anecdote during a joint appearance by the couple on the BBC's The One Show.

She said she was the subject of newspaper claims that she would have difficulty getting selected when she first tried to become an MP.

"Way back when I was wanting to be selected for a seat, one of the newspapers reported I was going to have trouble being selected to fight a seat as a Conservative candidate because of my new baby," said Mrs May.

“We didn’t think any more of it until that afternoon, my mother-in-law rang.”

Husband Philip then interjected saying: "My mum rang. She thought perhaps there was something we hadn’t told her."

"She was disappointed," the PM added.

Mrs May has previously spoken of her disappointment that her and husband Philip were unable to have children.

The couple laughed and joked during their first joint broadcast, which covered topics including Brexit, Banksy, Eurovision and her love of shoes.

Investment manager Philip, who met the PM when they were both students at Oxford University, was asked how hard it is to negotiate with his wife, who has been described by colleagues as “b**** difficult”.

Mr May, told presenter Alex Jones said: “Well it’s a good question. There’s give and take in every marriage. I get to decide when to take the bins out not if I take the bins out.”

The Conservative leader then chimed in and added: “There’s boy and girl jobs your see”.

Mr May said: “I definitely do the taking the bins out, I do the traditional boy job by and large.”
