Ed Miliband twice ducked the question today of whether he is a millionaire. In the wake of his speech attacking David Cameron for being rich enough to benefit from the cut in the top rate of tax from 50p to 45p, Labour’s leader was asked what he himself was worth.

“I’m not going to be getting the top rate tax cut,” said Mr Miliband whose home near Hampstead is reportedly worth £1.6 million.

When asked on the BBC to answer the question “what are you worth”, Mr Miliband stammered: “I, I’m not making an issue of David Cameron’s background or what David Cameron is worth.”

He said the point was about cutting tax for a section of the population when the Prime Minister was among them.

His bravura speech without notes yesterday was widely praised as a barnstormer.

But the lack of policy detail showed on a tour of radio and TV stations today.
