Man charged with assault after Jeremy Corbyn was egged at mosque

A man has been charged with assault after Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn was egged during a visit to a north London mosque.

Scotland Yard said John Murphy, 31, from Barnet, was charged in the early hours of Monday with assault by beating and will appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, March 19.

The Islington MP continued with his planned programme of constituency events following the incident.

Mr Corbyn was taking part in the firth annual Visit My Mosque with shadow home secretary Diane Abbott to the Finsbury Park Mosque and Muslim Welfare House.

Mr Corbyn had been sitting and chatting with community leaders when a man came from behind and smacked him over the head with an egg.

The alleged attacker was quickly surrounded by people in the room and police called.

Mr Corbyn is believed to have left with a police escort at around 6.30pm.

Mr Corbyn attended alongside Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott and had been given flowers while in attendance.

When arriving, Mr Corbyn was greeted with by women giving him red roses.
