London's US expats flocked to polling booths last night to cast their vote during Super Tuesday.

Hundreds of overseas voters turned out at the Abbey Community Centre in Westminster to cast their vote in the race for the Democratic nomination for November's US election.

Polls opened as part of Super Tuesday, when Democrats and Republicans in 13 states nominate who should run for the White House.

Chairman of Democrats Abroad, Robert Ravelli, said: “People want to make sure their voice is heard especially being overseas you can feel a little bit disconnected, so now people can feel much more part of the process and they’re going to make a difference.

“This is a very crucial election. We want to keep the White House.”

London’s polling station for overseas voters was one of five in the UK.

Stations also opened in Oxford, Cambridge, London, Edinburgh and St Andrews as part of Super Tuesday.

Some London voters attended a Bernie Sanders rally in Parliament Square as a show of support before casting their vote on Tuesday evening.

Travis Mooney, co-coordinator of LondonforBernie.org, said: “I think it is important to have some sort of an event so people actually know that they can vote and come out and do it.

“Especially this year, as the race is so tight that every single state and territory is going to be fought for including the votes of those of us overseas.”

Democrats Abroad will send a similar quantity of delegates to the Democrat National Convention as Wyoming and Alaska.

As well as 5 polling stations in the UK, Democrats Abroad also had 116 voting centres worldwide.

American voters in the UK will have until March 8 to cast their vote.
