Labour's chief welfare spokesperson has been sacked following an internal investigation into accusations of bullying.

Debbie Abrahams stands accused of bullying staff members, claims corroborated by a number of witnesses.

The MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, who has been Labour's shadow secretary of state for work and pensions since 2016, strongly denies the allegations.

A Labour Party spokesman said: "After a thorough party investigation into allegations of workplace bullying, Debbie Abrahams has been referred to the NEC disputes committee.

"She has been relieved of her post as Shadow Work and Pensions."

When the allegations first surfaced earlier this year, Ms Abrahams hit out at her accusers, saying: "My treatment by certain individuals in the Leader's Office over the last 10 months has been aggressive, intimidating and wholly unprofessional.

"My treatment in the last week has shown a bullying culture of the worst kind."

The Standard approached Ms Abrahams for comment.
