Health Secretary Matt Hancock joked there’s “nothing wrong with a bit of waffle in politics” after being caught on camera eating a calorie-laden breakfast.

The Tory leadership hopeful wolfed down a 332-calorie caramel Stroopwafel from Caffè Nero, containing 30g of sugar, immediately before going on air on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

Despite overseeing the nation’s health, Mr Hancock, 40, told presenter Piers Morgan: “I love my waffles!”

Mr Hancock tweeted: 'nothing wrong with a bit of waffle in politics'

“Just don’t have them all the time and do some exercise as well,” added the minister, who was made Health Secretary 10 months ago.

He later tweeted: “Nothing wrong with a bit of waffle in politics from time to time.”
