Singer Cher made an improbable intervention in UK politics as she joined MPs and former heads of state in reacting to the appointment of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary.

The hit artist branded the ex-London Mayor a liar in barbed comments posted on Twitter after Prime Minister Theresa May stunned Westminster by announcing he would feature in her top team.

Labour MP Chuka Umunna also responded to the news - referring to bizarre remarks Mr Johnson made about US president Barack Obama during the EU referendum campaign.

In a newspaper article published in April, the MP for Uxbridge and Ruislip was criticised for describing Mr Obama as a "part-Kenyan" who harboured an "ancestral dislike" of Britain.

Mr Umunna tweeted: "Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson's first official meeting with President Obama will be interesting. Suggest it starts with the word 'sorry"'.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron went further, posting: "Theresa May's reputation for competence lasted a few hours. Boris Johnson will spend more time apologising to nations he's offended."

The former Prime Minister of Sweden also raised an eyebrow at Mr Johnson’s appointment, tweeting a picture of him stranded on a zip line during London 2012 Olympics celebrations.

Carl Bildt, who led the country between 1991 and 1994, captioned it: “I wish it was a joke, but I fear it isn't. Exit upon exit.”

Singer Cher’s comments were less diplomatic.

Responding to a British journalist’s question on Twitter, she wrote: "Think He's F****** Idiot who lied to British ppl & Didnt have the (emojis of various sports balls) 2 lead them once 'leave' vote won."

Other social media users were quick to draw attention to some of Mr Johnson's other forays into global affairs - including his £1,000 victory in a poetry competition for an entry in which he called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a "wankerer".
