Boris: My green vision will save Londoners £1 billion on fuel bills

Boris Johnson said he has “a vision to save Londoners over a billion from their fuel bills” during a second term as mayor.

Mr Johnson promised to make London “greener, cleaner and more efficient”. But his claims were dismissed by opponents who accused him of “inaction and failure on green issues”.

The Mayor said he could save £762 million by making 1.2 million homes more energy efficient by 2015. But he conceded that his plan would rely on the Government’s Green Deal — a policy to transform the energy efficiency of 14 million homes nationally. Mr Johnson said he could save a further £237 million if City Hall meets its 45 per cent recycling target for 2015.

Green campaigners said that in 2008 Mr Johnson promised to spend £100 million on similar projects, but spent just £40 million. A spokesman for Ken Livingstone said: “Years of inaction and failure on green issues under the Tory Mayor has cost Londoners dear. Ken’s will help cut Londoners’ energy bills by £150 a year by securing London’s share of energy efficiency funding.”

Green candidate Jenny Jones said: “Boris Johnson has an appalling record on the environment.”
