Will Arianna Huffington step in to avert a Hay culture clash?

10 January 2014

Hay-on-Wye has long been the battleground for two highly cultured rivals — the Goliath of the Hay Literary Festival versus the David of the How The Light Gets In, an alternative philosophy and music festival founded five years ago.

Peter Florence, director of the Hay Festival, is believed to take a dim view of his speakers appearing at the upstart festival down the road and if they do want to visit HTLGI, they arrive with hats pulled down over their eyes. But this year a delicious situation looks set to develop. Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post, is due to speak on The Third Metric, her vision of how live a balanced life, at Hay in May. The problem is HuffPo is one of HTLGI’s media partners, and a very loyal one, and UK editor Carla Buzsaki is booked to speak there.

It’s unthinkable that Arianna would not turn up too. The Huffington Post assures the Londoner that it is not going to be a problem. Maybe La Huffington will finally be the person to carry an olive branch between the two festivals.
