Last week the Londoner suggested that Stephen Fry might make a popular candidate for director-general of the BBC. He’s not quite thrown his hat into the ring yet but he is supporting a new Twitter campaign for the Our Beeb petition, which is calling on the BBC Trust to “appoint a new BBC director-general transparently and openly”.

The drive for more transparency was initiated by Anthony Barnett, of the openDemocracy think-tank, who wants candidates to spell out their vision and the BBC Trust to publish the shortlisted entries.

Why not go further and allow the Twitterati to vote on a new DG? Fry, with five million followers, might do quite well at the polls.
