Sorry, Ed, the Irish just aren't that into you...

Despite arriving on the Commons terrace festooned with shamrocks, Labour leader Ed Miliband turned up so late last night for the pre-St Patrick’s Day event for the charity Champs he missed the keynote speeches by PM David Cameron and Irish premier Enda Kenny.

Miliband didn’t hear the Taoiseach’s vow to discover a Celtic branch of the Camerons similar to the link that has just been revealed between the Cork-based Fitzmaurice clan and the current Duchess of Cambridge.

“I’m sure,” quipped Kenny, “that just as there are Middletons in the Fitzmaurice line there are also Camerons hailing from Ireland.” There was no offer to find Irish ancestors for the tardy Ed Miliband.
